Why don’t inmates pay more to be in Alternative Programs?
For some inmates this is the first time they have ever had a job, received a paycheck, endorsed a check, and paid rent. This provides the inmate with a sense of accomplishment and responsibility while offsetting the cost of their incarceration. These responsibilities give the inmate a sense of pride and ability that boost their self esteem which encourages them to continue working and moving forward with their lives in a positive fashion thus reducing recidivism. It also allows the inmates to provide financial support to their families, pay court fees, pay child support, pay for their treatment and other related costs.
