How many jail beds does Lane County need?
There are several ways to determine this number. One way is to do a backwards calculation from our total number of releases due to over-crowding.  Since 2008, we have released an average of 3,518 inmates per year due to overcrowding. Based on historical data, each additional bed will result in 9 fewer over-crowding releases. To eliminate the over-crowding releases, we would need an additional 391 beds.  This added to our current number of funded beds equals 784 beds.  Additional beds would be needed to fulfill contractual obligations and in order to abide by our federal consent decree.  Also, beds would be needed to provide alternative program housing for offenders to successfully transition back into the community as well as ensure attendance in treatment and educational programs.  It is estimated that the total beds needed would come to about 1,200.
