The STD Exam
After signing in at the front desk, you will be called by your number or sent to the lab for blood work. We will test your blood for syphilis and if you like, HIV. We also test for gonorrhea and chlamydia by swabbing the areas that might be infected. Other testing depends on your symptoms.

Some problems may be found during the exam and treated the same day. You will be given a card with the dates to call for lab results. Some results will not be ready for two weeks. A positive result may mean that you need to return for treatment.

Appointment Tips
Women
You will be more comfortable if your bladder is empty. Also, we need to know the first day of your last menstrual period. If you are having your period at the time of the exam, it will be harder to detect some problems. If you think you might be pregnant, pregnancy testing is available through: the Lane County Public Health Prenatal Assistance ProgramRiverstone Community Health Center or Planned Parenthood  of Southwest Oregon.

Men
DO NOT URINATE before the exam. This can affect some of the results of your test.

HIV Testing & Counseling
HIV testing can be part of an STD/STI visit. It is optional. The cost is an additional $30.00. After the STD/STI exam, a counselor will discuss HIV risk factors and help you make a safer sex plan. You will be scheduled to return for your HIV test results in two weeks.  To learn more about this program click here.
