Fast Response Contains Fire at Howard Buford Recreation Area
A fire earlier this afternoon has been fully contained by fire crews at the Howard Buford Recreation Area as of 2:45 this afternoon. The south and east sides of the park, including the popular arboretum and summit trail, have reopened to visitors. The north side of the park will remain closed as crews continue to monitor and investigate the cause of the blaze.
The fast response from the Oregon Department of Forestry and, in particular, a helicopter used to dump water on the blaze was instrumental in keeping the fire to only 1.15 acres. ODF crews are performing mop-up operations, and the area will be monitored throughout the weekend by Lane County Parks staff and volunteers.
“I want to thank all of our fire crews and ODF for responding quickly and keeping this fire small,” said Lane County Parks Manager Mike Russell. “The ODF helicopter was able to put a significant volume of water on the fire very quickly and was instrumental in the quick end to the incident.”
