Household Hazardous Waste Roundup Scheduled in Florence

What: Household Hazardous Waste Roundup. The collection is free for hazardous waste that is from household sources, up to 35 gallons total per customer. Hazardous waste from businesses, schools, churches or non-profit organizations may be subject to disposal fees.

When: Noon to 5 p.m., Friday, October 3, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, October 4

Where: Florence Transfer Station, 2820 N. Rhododendron Drive, Florence.

Who: All community members are welcome to participate in the roundup.

What to bring:
Paint, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, and other household hazardous waste. Check labels for words like flammable, corrosive, poison, caution, and danger.

Please don't bring:
Empty containers, radioactive waste, asbestos or explosives. Any empty containers can be safely thrown in the trash. For information about disposal of radioactive waste, asbestos and explosives, call Lane County Waste Management Division at 682-4120.

What about hazardous waste from businesses?
Businesses which generate small amounts of hazardous waste may pre-register to bring that waste to this event. Businesses must pay for disposal of the waste, but most can save money by using this program, rather than hiring a contractor on their own.

Electronics Recycling
Electronics Recycling is provided by NextStep Recycling. Televisions and computer monitors contain 5-10 lbs of lead and small amounts of other hazardous substances. In addition, electronics consist of multiple materials that are dismantled, sorted and transported before they are recycled. To cover these costs, recycling fees will be assessed for television sets, computers (CPUs), laptops, computer monitors and copy machines.

Electronics that are recycled for free include: cell phones, VCRs, stereos, telephones, DVD players, printers, typewriters, fax machines and video games.

Lane County accepts sharps, oil, and batteries of all types year-round at all refuse disposal sites. Water-based products like latex paint are generally not hazardous and can usually be safely disposed of in the trash.
