Event Recycling Bins and Durable Dishware Program

Take your event to the next level! Start recycling, add food waste composting and/or aim for Zero Waste with washable dishware!

Lane County Waste Management partnered with the City of Eugene to begin this program.  We offer Blue Recycle bins and Green Compost bins to events that wish to recycle but do not have the equipment.

By making sure a recycle bin is placed next to each and every garbage can, you can capture valuable aluminum cans and plastic bottles is possible (some or most valued at 10 cents each when returned) If you are recycling more than these deposit beverage containers that you take to be refunded (FYI: the deposit value is now 10 cents and in 2018, all teas, juices and other single serve beverage containers will be included), be sure to discuss and arrange details of other with the event's garbage company.  Most collection services can pick up recycling for no extra fee, but it must be pre-arranged.  Call to reserve the bins (bins are available first come first serve).  541-682-2059

• Bin signs are bilingual and adaptable to each event with a place to post examples.

• Clear bags make it easy to see and remove misplaced items.

• On windy days, weights are necessary: milk jugs filled with water, concrete pavers, or sand bags do the trick.

For composting and other Zero Waste efforts, a green team and/or preplanning is needed to identify/require use of biodegradable food service ware and arrange for material delivery to a commercial compost company (phone consultation and guidance can be provided 541-682-2059).  Communicating with vendors and food services at the event is essential to the success of changing systems toward zero waste.  See left side of this page for more resources and sample communications with perspective vendors.

If you are aiming to compost food service materials like cups, plates and utensils,
BEWARE OF BIODEGRADABLES--not all that claim to be biodegradable are successfully compostable. click here for a quick primer on this issue,  and ALWAYS be sure the commercial composter that will receive your materials will accept it before you make the purchase.

Please Notice:   The products do not degrade sufficiently,  and they make it nearly impossible to see and sort out real trash. Fewer and fewer of the Compost operations are able or willing to accept these materials.  Generally, they'd love the food waste but the paper and plastic service wares do not add any value to make up for the serious  problems they create.
