Learning Institute Training | Micro-Inequities: The Changing Face of Oppression

When: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Where: Lane County Public Works Goodson Training Room, 3040 North Delta Hwy, Eugene [click here for map/directions]

About the Training:

The face of overt bigotry in the workplace has changed. People now have a higher level of awareness about the fact that openly hostile, derogatory, or bigoted remarks will not be tolerated. However, incidents of harassment and discrimination still occur, and individuals from historically marginalized populations (people of color, individuals who experience a disabling condition, etc.) still experience hostility and aggression on a regular basis. Much of this can be attributed to the way bias has been driven underground. Some terms being applied to these expressions and experiences of bias are micro-aggression, micro-inequities, and micro-discrimination.

This training is designed to educate participants about these micro-biases. Participants will be asked to think about how their own life experiences impacted their perspectives on the world. From this vantage point, participants will discuss scenarios of micro-inequities in the workplace, explore the impact of these examples, and practice tools for interrupting or redirecting these situations to lead to better outcomes. Utilizing video, stories, and conversation, this training will provide opportunities for new perspectives and tools for further skill development. The goal of this training is to educate participants and leave them feeling empowered to work towards becoming a part of a community of allies who are working to reduce inequities and the incidents and impacts of bias and microaggressions.
