Waste Management awarded DOE battery grant

If you look around your house or at your workplace, you are sure to see a lot of batteries.

All too often, these batteries—which contain many valuable metals—end up in the garbage. To help divert batteries from the landfill to battery collection sites for recycling, Lane County recently applied for and won a $1-plus million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The grant funding will:

♦ Establish two curbside battery collection pilots.
♦
Support Bi-Mart retail drop-off sites for battery recycling.
♦
Increase battery storage capacity at the LCWM Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility.
♦
Hire one full-time employee dedicated to battery processing.
♦
Reach all Lane County residents with battery safety and recycling program information to increase battery recycling and reduce battery fires.

The county is excited to work with our regional partners as we roll out this work!

Waste Management wins FEMA grant for Florence, Glenwood Transfer Stations

It’s no secret that Lane County faces many natural challenges. The county’s coastal region and the Willamette Valley are subject to several natural hazards, including wind and winter storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, and wildfires.

To mitigate these risks, Lane County recently applied for a grant to help two transfer stations—Glenwood and Florence—stay fully operational when the power goes out by winning a $171,000 grant to install a permanent backup power source for these critical waste management sites.

“After emergency events, waste management is vital,” said Maya Buelow, Lane County waste reduction specialist. Lane County’s largest transfer site (Glenwood) must remain operational to ensure waste transportation to Short Mountain Landfill, the county’s only municipal landfill. At Glenwood and Florence, generator power would allow crucial systems to function uninterrupted, including pit building fire alarms and alarm monitoring stations, fire suppression systems, and lighting infrastructure related to waste collection and emergency exit illumination, among others.
