Waste Wise Lane County event season kicks into full gear

By Daniel Hiestand
Lane County Waste Reduction Outreach Coordinator

Who knew there were so many uses for lemon juice for DIY cleaning solutions? And don't get me started on vinegar.
Climate Wins
This month, if you haven't guessed by now, we will briefly explore the world of DIY homemade cleaners and how they are often beneficial for personal health and the planet. And the cool thing is they are super duper easy to make.

We'll also look at the importance of celebrating wins, big and small, when it comes to our marathon fight to address the climate crisis. Dr. Kate Mills, an associate professor from the University of Oregon will share her thoughts on this through a science-based lens in this month's Frontlines article.

But first, let's take a quick tour of all the great stuff happening in the coming weeks here with Waste Wise Lane County.

Electronics Recycling Competition

Do you have unwanted, unused, or broken electronics? Donate them to your student’s school during the NextStep Electronics Recycling Competition from Jan. 7 to March 20, 2025. Schools that recycle the most e-waste can win grants of up to $500, a NextStep Reuse Store computer gift certificate, and a recognition award! Last year, 18 Lane County schools collected 13,269 pounds.

Pass on the competition registration form by Dec. 13 to your student’s principal by visiting wastewiselane.org/ERC. Please note the website may not be fully operational until mid-November.

No newsletter (blog) in December

HBO SuccessionMoving forward, I've decided that December will be a month of silence for Waste Wise News. One big reason: we have a big holiday waste campaign every year, which takes some time to set up. Also, I'm pretty sure I'll be slouching on the couch watching the final episodes of Succession (I know I'm late to the party, but it's REALLY good).

Are you enjoying the newsletter? Are there topics you wish we would cover? Please share your thoughts with us at [email protected]. Thanks for reading.
