Before you are ready to begin construction, apply to the Subsurface Sanitation Program for a septic permit. At the same time, you may make application to the Building Program for your building permit. At this point it may be necessary to update planning clearance approval on your land; if so, the Planning Program staff will help you through this step. All three programs are within the Land Management Division. Once you have received final planning clearance approval, the Subsurface Sanitation Program can accept your septic and building permit applications. You should also apply at this time for the applicable state electrical permits. Follow the instructions included in the checklist included with this document.

Your permit will include specific instructions on the installation of your septic system. You will also receive a detailed site diagram showing the appropriate location for your system. It is generally advisable to have the work completed by a licensed installer; however, you may do the work yourself. A list of licensed installers doing business in Lane County is available from the Subsurface Sanitation Program.

A septic tank drainfield system requires regular maintenance to function properly. You can make this maintenance easier by keeping a diagram showing the location of your house, septic tank manholes, piping and soil absorption system. Periodic pumping of the septic tank will be necessary. Driving heavy vehicles over the disposal field area may cause damage and should be avoided.
