Chronic diseases, led by cancer and heart disease, and accidents remain the leading causes of death in Lane County. Deaths from the most common cancers (lung, prostate, breast cancer) and heart disease have steadily declined or remained stable. However, tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death.

Until recently, Lane County generally had a higher life expectancy than the state overall. Infant mortality rates also were lower in Lane County than the state until recent years.
