Secondary roads and highways are largely impassable and will continue to be so throughout the evening and night.

Reports of drivers searching online or on mobile mapping applications for rural routes to avoid closures and slow downs on I-5 are concerning as Lorane Highway, London Road and others are in much worse condition than main routes.

“Most mobile mapping applications cannot provide accurate road condition information,” said Lane County Emergency Manager Patence Winningham. “It is especially dangerous in winter storms like this when drivers risk becoming trapped on a secondary route with no cell phone service, making rescue difficult or impossible until conditions improve.”

Emergency service response is limited throughout the area and will become more constrained as temperatures fall and road conditions worsen overnight.

Residents are urged to stay home and off the roads, especially as it gets dark.
