McKenzie River Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event coming Nov. 2

For folks in and around Vida-Leaburg, save a trip to Eugene and drop off your household hazardous waste materials closer to home during a collection event on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McKenzie Fire and Rescue Leaburg Station (42870 McKenzie Hwy., Leaburg)

Many common household products contain hazardous ingredients. Anything with a caution label such as Danger, Warning or Caustic can become a pollutant to groundwater and streams. Avoiding these products saves money and protects people, wildlife and our environment. Alternatively, if you are coming to Eugene soon, schedule a dropoff appointment at Glenwood Transfer Station (3100 E. 17th Ave., Eugene) at any time of the year at lanecountyor.gov/hazwaste.

Mixed Recycling with #1 and #2 Plastics

Beginning June 1, 2022#1 and #2 bottles, jars and jugs (if larger than a tennis ball) can be recycled in curbside containers or taken to ANY Lane County transfer station. Be sure to check the shape and number. Download a pamphlet for more information.

Short Mountain Landfill - Info & Hours



Short Mountain Landfill is the only permitted municipal landfill in Lane County. The landfill is located 5.5 miles south of Eugene on Interstate 5.

Short Mountain Landfill is closed to public access and open to authorized commercial account holders ONLY. For information about access, rates, asbestos disposal or any other issues pertaining to the landfill, please contact (541)682-4120.

Short Mountain has been in operation since 1976 and covers 103 acres and will cover 220 acres at full build-out. Short Mountain Landfill accepts approximately 275,000 tons of material per year. The landfill employs methane capture and manages adjacent wetlands in an effort to reduce impacts to wildlife and the natural environment.

Disposal of Asbestos at Short Mountain Landfill

Lane County accepts asbestos-containing building materials for disposal at Short Mountain Landfill (SML) by appointment ONLY. Loads must be properly prepared and labeled in accordance with federal law before they are delivered to SML.

Call (541) 726-3047 in advance of your delivery to make an appointment, receive disposal instructions, hours of operation and pricing.

Here are the steps you can take to prepare your load of asbestos-containing building materials for delivery to Short Mountain Landfill.

1. Use an accredited asbestos inspector to survey your project for materials that may contain asbestos.
2. Have any suspect materials tests by an analytical lab.
3. Fill out an LRAPA ASN-4 Asbestos Waste Shipment form or DEQ ASN 4 Waste Shipment Report form.

Leachate Management

Leachate Management

Leachate (liquid that percolates down through the waste mass) is captured, pumped and transported 5.5 miles to Glenwood Transfer Station. At that point, leachate is discharged into the sanitary sewer system where it goes to the City of Eugene's Wastewater Treatment facility.

Methane Recovery

Methane Capture
 Short Mountain Landfill employs aggressive methane capture and has a long-term partnership with Emerald People's Utility District to capture landfill gas to power turbine engines that create electricity that powers EPUD homes.

In 2018, approximately 4,663 metric tons of methane was captured, enough to power 1,200 homes for a year.

Wetland Mitigation

Quamash Prairie

Lane County Waste Management manages 158 acres of wetland mitigation at the 265-acre Quamash Prairie site located 5.5 miles south of the Eugene/Springfield metro area, adjacent to Short Mountain Landfill.

Quamash Prairie parcel was acquired in 2002 for mitigation. The site is in close proximity to 100 acres of mature Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia) & Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) bottomland forest that encompasses the Camas Swale.

The Quamash Prairie wetland mitigation site has been developed as an outdoor classroom, and provides education and service learning opportunities to students. The proximity of this outdoor classroom to the Short Mountain Landfill also allows students to learn about materials management and how waste is managed locally.
