To obtain a marriage license:
- Fill out the online Marriage License Application.
- After applying online, please visit our office at least three days before your ceremony to complete the license process. Both parties must appear in person to review and sign the license.
- Payment is due at the time the license is signed and issued for use.
- Birth certificates are highly recommended, but not required when filling out the application and when purchasing the marriage license.
Marriage licenses become effective three days after being signed. They are valid for 60 days beginning on the effective date.
Age Requirement
No one under 17 years of age may marry in Oregon. A 17-year-old may marry with the consent of a parent or guardian. Consent forms are available from the Lane County Clerk’s Office.
Three (3) Day Waiting Period
Regardless of whether you submit your marriage license application form online or complete it in our office, both parties must visit our office at least 3 days prior to your marriage ceremony in order to complete the application process.
The 3 day waiting period may be waived by the County Clerk for a good and sufficient reason. (A good and sufficient reason is defined as specific ground for taking any action relative to the situation. This action will be rational and shall not be arbitrary or capricious). The fee for the waiver is $10.00 and the license fee and waiver must be paid in cash.
Legal Names Taken
Each person in the marriage must select their legal name after the marriage. More information about name changes.
Venue
Licenses issued by Lane County can only be used for ceremonies conducted within Oregon.
Cost of the Marriage License
The total cost of a marriage license is $60, which is non-refundable. Optional choices include the Decorative Certificates are available for $1 and Certified Copy of the Marriage License is available for $7.75. We accept payment in the form of checks, money orders, cash, and credit or debit cards. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Lane County Deeds and Records. All credit and debit card transactions are subject to a 3% convenience fee that goes directly to the bank to cover the cost of processing the card transaction.
Officiants
Ordained officiants do not register with the state or county prior to performing a marriage ceremony. Officiants must meet the requirements of ORS 106.120. It is the responsibility of the officiant to properly complete the marriage license form. Please refer to the “Instructions to Officiants” document included in the marriage packet for more information. We do not make referrals to officiants who are authorized to perform marriage ceremonies. For available officiants, please search online or look in the yellow pages in your telephone book.
Medical Examinations
Medical exams and blood tests are not required.
