Howard Buford Recreation Area U of O Landscape Architecture Summit Design Studio.
This book is the compilation of student work in a University
of Oregon Landscape Architecture Design Studio during Winter Quarter 2020.
Fifteen Landscape Architecture students studied the
environmental and social aspects of the Mt. Pisgah summit and Howard Buford
Recreation Area (HBRA) as a whole. The book contains the results of their site
investigations, mapping and user interviews. The book also presents the
students’ design solutions to address environmental impacts and improve visitor
experience, both around the summit of Mt. Pisgah and elsewhere along the HBRA
trail system.
Their common goal was explore different “what if” scenarios
of how to anticipate and respond to HBRA’s growing popularity. The focus was
optimizing how the implementation of the HBRA Habitat Management Plan enhances
visitor experience, and how visitor infrastructure, HBRA planning, visitor
programs and visitor management can support the achievement of the Habitat
Management Plan.
Note that this book is not an adopted management plan. It is
unlikely that designs that are included in this book will be implemented as
shown here. Rather the analysis and designs serve as tools for envisioning
different approaches to responding to the complex issues at the summit.
Any future improvements at the summit or elsewhere in the
park will be consistent with adopted Parks planning documents, including the
HBRA Habitat Management Plan, the HBRA Master Plan, and the Lane County Parks
Master Plan.
