Defensible Space - a safety zone for your home

What is a defensible space?

Defensible space is the area between a house and an oncoming wildfire where vegetation has been modified to reduce the wildfire threat and to provide an opportunity for firefighters to effectively defend the house.

Defensible space practices include:

  • Increasing the moisture content of vegetation
  • Decreasing the amount of flammable vegetation
  • Shortening plant height
  • Altering the arrangement of plants
